COUNSELOR

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!

I would like to take this opportunity to help you become familiar with the role of the School Counselor. At the elementary school, the Counseling Program offers various services to students, teachers and parents. Below is a description of these services provided by the Counseling Program at Jack P. Nix Elementary School:

 Classroom Guidance

The counselor works with each classroom on a regular basis to teach various lessons to the students. The lessons taught focus on building skills to help students successfully get along at school and in the community. As a result of regular visits to the classrooms, the students have an opportunity to develop a positive relationship with the counselor. Topics covered during classroom guidance include but are not limited to bullying, making friends, too good for drugs curriculum, safe and unsafe touches, and the state CTAE curriculum.

 Individual Counseling

The counselor is available to talk with students on an individual basis as needed. This service provides students with a safe and private environment to talk about any issues that may be affecting them. If a student is in need of more extensive counseling, the School Counselor will be happy to refer the family to an outside agency.

 Small Group Counseling

The counselor organizes small groups of students who share common concerns. These groups meet in the counselor’s office once a week for four to six weeks. Some of the small group topics include but are not limited to self-concept, motivation, personal hygiene, peer relations, and family changes. Parents and teachers make the referrals for participation in these groups. No child will participate in a small group without written permission from his/her parent or guardian.

 Parent Consultation

The counselor is available to talk with parents or guardians when students are having academic, behavioral, emotional or social difficulties. In addition, videos, books and magazines may be checked out from the media center. These materials provide valuable information regarding parental issues. The counselor can also refer families to various agencies to help with specific needs.

I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with your child this year. If I can be of any assistance to you or your family, please call me at 865-6935.

 Sincerely,

Erica Owens

Welcome back, families!

We love that you too can emphasize the monthly "big idea" value that your child is learning in school. These simple ideas help you and your child: SAY, KNOW, SEE, and especially BE JOY this month.

Finding a way to be happy, even when things don't go your way.

Start by watching, together, this fun show all about Responsibility, brought to us by The Big Idea Experience team.

Then follow up each week with these easy ways to

SAY, KNOW, SEE, and BE it!
